The Inventory Safari

When it came time to gather people for a warehouse inventory, a task that was, to put it mildly, not the most exciting one, I paused for a moment. In the past, it had been simple: a dry announcement like “Volunteers needed.” Quick, to the point, and met with exactly zero enthusiasm.
Now that felt wrong. I opened my laptop, typed a couple of lines… smiled, added a few more. Then I got into the flow. My fingers tapped the keys, and a small adventure story began to form in my head. After rereading it, I added the final touch, the title:
“The Inventory Safari—a mini-adventure you never expected”
…and hit “Send.”
This is what ended up flying around the office:
“Dear lovers of all things beautiful,
Tired of identical office walls, dry air-conditioned winds, and the Bermuda triangle of ‘monitor – coffee – meeting’?
Dreaming of breaking free from routine?
Longing to admire rare specimens of post-Soviet suburban architecture, dive into the thickets of accounting truth, and mingle with the brightest minds of our company?
Then this journey is for you!
We invite you to an unforgettable Inventory Safari—a mini-expedition that leads through the scenic corners of the Moscow region and the little-explored territories of our warehouse.
What awaits you on this expedition:
• Admire luxurious three-story dachas with plasterboard columns and wrought-iron fences hiding the soul of an era.
• Unforgettable natural landscapes: birch groves and aromas beyond description.
• And the mysteries of an ancient warehouse, holding items, names, and destinies long erased from the memory of Accounting.
Tour highlights:
• A panoramic tour: ‘The Romance of Pallets’
• A quest: ‘Find three identical boxes—and one without a label.’
• A deep encounter with documents no one has seen since 2005.
Bonus features:
• Birdsong and the occasional colleague joining in.
• The unforgettable feeling of contributing to a great cause!
Feedback from past participants:
• ‘After this trip, I see life differently.’
• ‘It wasn’t just inventory. It was purification.’
• ‘I still dream about the boxes.’
Don’t miss it! It happens only once a year, and every time feels like the first!
Dress code: ‘Warehouse chic’—comfortable, durable, and smiling.

Even though everyone understood it was a joke, the warehouse faced an unprecedented problem: too many volunteers. Later, walking through the office, I noticed that even colleagues I barely knew greeted me with a smile. Behind the wall of numbers and regulations, another side of our department began to show—lively, open, and smiling.
